An Explosion of Innovation for Aging in Place

The world is awash with information and innovation designed to maximize the independence of our aging society, aka “allowing seniors to age in place at home.” We think this is a good thing.

We are taking part in this process and often come across interesting nuggets. From time to time we like to share some with our network of colleagues, clients and friends.

OpenIDEO
Openideo.com is a forum that poses important societal challenges and invites its readers to submit solutions to them.  In response to a recent challenge, How might we all maintain wellbeing and thrive as we age?, some interesting ideas have surfaced:

Designing-Our-Future Participatory Pods
Participatory Pods are physical spaces within Senior or Community Centers, Assisted Living Facilities, etc. where retired/aging/mature individuals can collaborate with others and help to create solutions to aging-related challenges for themselves and for their communities.

The Sandwich Game (in production)
According to the Pew Research Center just over 1 of every 8 Americans aged 40 to 60 is both raising a child and caring for a parent, in addition to about 1 in 7 providing financial support to both an aging parent and a child.

The Sandwich Game is a mobile application and gameplay experience where users share how they engage with their kids and parents on a daily basis. It is a place to compete (i.e. who shares the best day of activities) while feeling rewarded and learning from other players the great ways they’re improving the lives of their kids and parents.

Tech-enhanced Life
Tech-enhanced Life was started by several forward thinkers who are building a virtual community designed to accelerate the emergence of products and services at intersection of aging and technology.

While the business model is yet to be determined, this community is attracting a diverse group of individuals and has also created a spin off project Aging In Place Technologies, which holds monthly meetups.

Stanford Center on Longevity
Drawing from 140+ faculty the nearly decade Stanford Center on Longevity looks at what a longer-life means to us and how we can adapt at both an individual and societal level. Their work is organized across three general categories: Mind, Mobility and Financial Security.

The Center recently held its own design challenge for Maximizing Independence for those with Cognitive Impairment. The finalists have been announced, the winner will be chosen after another round of scrutiny in April.
